Roll-a-Sketches from Seattle! + Convention Schedule

Here are some Roll-a-Sketch drawings I did the other weekend in Seattle! Roll-a-Sketches, of course, are drawings whose subjects are randomly chosen by the throwing of dice — or, as the ancient Romans used to call them, “Bones-a-Etches.”

Thanks to those of you who came and said hello at the booth, either to grab a book, or a sketch, or maybe pick up your Wondermark jigsaw puzzle! It was nice to see you all.

My current convention schedule for the rest of this year, so far, is:

MAY 15-17 : Maker Faire Bay Area, San Mateo : I’ll be in the Bazaar as usual!

MAY 23-24 : Vancouver Comic Arts Festival : Looking forward to a triumphant return to BC

JULY 8-12 : San Diego Comic-Con or whatever

JULY 30-AUG 2 : Gen Con Indy : I might try to host a playtest of a game this time around!

AUG 19-23 : World Science Fiction Convention / Sasquan, Spokane, WA : I missed last year, but I’m coming back, and I’m bringing Dave Kellett with me!

That’s it for the spring and summer. Maybe one or two more in the fall. Hope to see you at one of them!!

Daily Roll-a-Sketch drawings continue at rollasketch.com! Oh yeah and we got coloring books too!

This weekend: Emerald City Comicon!

This weekend I’ll be in Seattle for the wonderful Emerald City Comicon! I’ll be at the TopatoCo table on the skybridge (booth 1102).

YES

I’ll be hosting two panels.

The first is the URBAN DICTIONARY GAME SHOW. We did this last year and it was super funny — check out the video from 2014!

In last year’s panel, I had contestants Ryan North, Kate Leth, Chip Zdarsky, and Trin Garritano try to guess the definitions of terrible, disgusting terms from that wonderful fount of true actual non made-up knowledge, Urban Dictionary.

This year, Trin and Kate are back, and we’ll be joined by Nika Harper and Jenn Bane!

It’ll be a raucous great time on Friday night, in the following room, with the following description:

Urban Dictionary Game Show
Room: Hall B (WSCC 602-603)
Date: Friday, March 27th
Time: 6:30PM – 8:30PM
Moderator: David Malki ! (Wondermark)

Watch a panel-discussion type game show where panelists Kate Leth (Kate or Die), Nika Harper (Wordplay), and Trin Garritano & Jenn Bane (Cards Against Humanity) attempt to define the weirdest and grossest terms the Urban Dictionary website has to offer. It’s a super entertaining time as funny and charismatic people attempt to guess and define these terrible terms. This panel is recommended for those 18+.

Then, on Saturday night, I’m hosting another game show!

TopatoCo Presents: Mashdown! The Mashup Showdown
Room: Hall E (TCC 303)
Date: Saturday, March 28th
Time: 5:50PM – 6:40PM
Moderator: David Malki ! (Wondermark)

Mashups: the 100% definite most creative way to design pop culture merchandise! Which of our TopatoCo artists and friends can identify all the elements in a given mashup? And can they think of an idea so bad it doesn’t already exist out there in the world already? Join Frank Gibson (Capture Creatures), Dave Kellett (Sheldon; Drive), Kris Straub (Chainsawsuit), Trin Garritano (Cards Against Humanity) & Holly Rowland (TopatoCo) to find out!

Super looking forward to it all. Hope to see you there!!

This weekend: Webcomics Rampage in Austin!

RAMPAGE

This coming Saturday and Sunday, I’ll be in Austin for the Webcomics Rampage event at Dragon’s Lair!

A bunch of other cool people will be there too:

Danielle Corsetto / Joel Watson / Randy Milholland / E.K. Weaver / David Willis / Alex Woolfson / Dusty Jack and JD Saxon / Dax Tran-Caffee / C. Spike Trotman / Noelle Stevenson / David McGuire / Melanie Gillman

Dragon’s Lair Comics and Fantasy
2438 West Anderson Lane
Austin, TX, 78757
1pm-7pm both days

I will have books and games and I will be doing sketches! If you come, I will see you there!!

Monday November 10! THE TOURNAMENT

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I perform on an improv comedy team here in Los Angeles. We’re one of eight house teams at the Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica.

it's true

That’s us! A nice-looking bunch! Our team name is The Audience. Our show features improvised music, and things happening to imaginary people, and jokes and so on.

The theater holds occasional tournaments, and this is the first time The Audience has participated in one. Over the last two weeks, we’ve won our nights and have now advanced to THE FINAL ROUND — which will be this Monday night, November 10!

In the tournament, two teams each perform for 20 minutes, and then two judges and the audience vote on which team had a better show. My team is up against the three-time reigning champion team, Cobranauts.

In another tournament several years ago, my old team lost to them! Now…THE CHANCE FOR REVENGE IS NIGH.

I’m really proud to be doing some smart stuff and good comedy with The Audience, and if you’re in the Los Angeles area, I’d like to invite you to attend on Monday night!

The show is free, and there is no drink minimum (though the drinks are pretty cheap). Advance tickets are not required.

We start at 8pm, but to ensure seats, getting there early is recommended. The theater’s at the Santa Monica Promenade (it’s the only theater with an entrance in an alleyway. Just like ALL THE BEST THEATERS).

We’re going to put on a great live show — I have a lot of fun with these knuckleheads. And, of course, the audience vote is a big part of determining the night’s winner, so if you attend, you’ll have a say in how the night goes for me.

Hope to see you there!!

The Annals of Improbable Kickstarters, and other things

GET IT

Here is a new short fiction anthology that I have a story in!

It’s called HELP FUND MY ROBOT ARMY!!! & Other Improbable Crowdfunding Projects, edited by multi-award-winning anthologist John Joseph Adams and featuring a ton of excellent writers including Mary Robinette Kowal, Monte Cook (whom I briefly met at GenCon last week), Mur Lafferty, Scott Sigler, and many, many others.

The stories in the book all take the form of Kickstarter projects (the project description, tiers, updates, comments, etc.) for improbable things, like the robot army of the title, or cat assassins, or a divine taco, or in my case, “Live-Action Arena Tetris.” (Read more story summaries.)

The entire giant book is on sale right now for just 99¢ on Amazon! (update: due to various restrictions by Amazon, the special price is in the US store only.) Other ebook platforms will follow. This one is an ebook exclusive.

Speaking of crowdfunding, I’ll also be at:

backed!!!

On Monday, September 15, I’ll be part of a panel discussion at USC along with filmmakers Meirav Haber (Stan), Kyle Rankin (Night Of The Living Deb), and Tracy Droz Tragos (Rich Hill), talking about…Kickstarter! I will try to sneak some jokes in, between all the LIFE-CHANGING ADVICE we will surely be dealing out.

The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.

And speaking of jokes and japery…

FLIP ITTTTT

On October 4-5, I’ll be in San Francisco at the TableFlip gaming conference, presenting a talk about how themes can affect play in tabletop games.

Also speaking at the conference will be Max Temkin (Cards Against Humanity), Matt Leacock (Pandemic), and Volko Ruhnke & Brian Train (the COIN Series).

Attendance is limited and it’ll probably sell out before long, but registration is currently open!

That’s the whole rest of my year, as far as events go!

Hope to see you at one…OR ALL???????
