Comic Transcripts

A woman holds up a thick hardcover book. Smiling, she addresses her friend! What a nice friendship they seem to have!

READER: I just finished reading HEADSTABBERS: FATHOMS!

FRIEND: Ooh, what’d you think?

READER: I LOVED it. Meiji-era Atlantis was SUCH a cool setting. And the way the writing AUTHENTICALLY felt like a wet manuscript was SO compelling

READER: And of course, I fell in love with Vertebrakz INSTANTLY.

FRIEND: I would GIVE MY LIFE for Vertebrakz. Even if such a sacrifice were completely unnecessary.

READER: So, yeah! I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it!

FRIEND: Then you’ll be thrilled to learn it’s just the START of a 66-BOOK CYCLE!

The Reader is suddenly overwhelmed by this thought, throwing off flop sweat. Nervously, she asks:

READER: W-will you tell me if the rest of them are as good as the first?

FRIEND (eyes narrowed): How DARE you demand the FORBIDDEN KNOWLEDGE

A young David Malki !, Steve Carey, and Ryan North, June 2006.

The computers tell me it was 20 years ago, June 9, 2006, that I arrived in New York for my first-ever comic convention as an exhibitor, MoCCA.

It was an important trip for me, a milestone in what would go on to become my career.

I wrote a little reminiscence on Patreon (free/unlocked) — including a first-since-then reprint of the photocomics I made at the time, documenting the trip!
