Emerald City Roll-a-Sketches!

Here is a small sample of the Roll-a-Sketch drawings I did for kind folks at the Emerald City Comicon last week!

I have evolved the system now to the point where I use four different color-coded dice. It’s a ton of fun — it saves me from having to think of something new to draw for each person, because the system of dice rolling determines it for me, and it also saves me from the rut of falling into a few predictable repeated sketches, which is boring. With this method, whenever I get tired of one type of sketch, I simply erase that element from the master list and replace it with something else.

For the uninitiated: Roll-a-Sketch is a thing I do at conventions, where I have a sign with lists of nouns on them: things like kitten, cactus, mermaid, cowboy, and so on. Patrons roll dice to select either two or four elements from the lists, and I draw a sketch hilariously combining the chosen elements!

SOMETHING LIKE THIS (click any picture for bigger):

Other examples include this ELEPHANT + TANK:

DINOSAUR + SHEEP:

ROBOT + ROBOCOP (they were both on the list and I should have figured that the combination would eventually come up):

And of course the traditional ELEPHANT + CACTUS + GIRAFFE + DOCTOR:

Thanks to the patrons who commissioned (and rolled to determine) these sketches! I hope they are gracing your homes in places of honor. And come see me at any show this year for a Roll-a-Sketch of your very own!

Videos: Machine of Death FATE BLITZ

Over the weekend I posted some ARCHIVAL VIDEO of Kris Straub and I talking about our ongoing Machine of Death card game Kickstarter. Basically we recorded a bunch of stuff in advance to cover any possible eventualities that might occur once we launched the campaign.

Here they are for your edification! Video 1 / Video 2 / Video 3

I also posted a new infographic to the MOD Kickstarter to try and clarify all the cool stuff that everyone will be getting as rewards! That and some other videos and nonsense are right here.

THIS WEEKEND: Emerald City Comicon!

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I’m at the Emerald City Comicon in Seattle! I’ll be at the TopatoCo table (booth 1002) with my trusty Roll-a-Sketch sketchbook, as well as copies of Emperor of the Food Chain, Classy Lady Like You Will Love the Smell of My Butt, and free convention-exclusive cards for the Machine of Death card game!

Speaking of which, here is a new video about SAID GAME. It is about contingencies!

Machine of Death game – Playthrough video

In case you missed it, here’s a video of one of our Machine of Death card game playtests! It gives you a brief look at some of the mechanics of how the game is played.

Our pledge campaign is still going strong! Thank you so much to everyone who’s supported us, we’re gonna make this game just the absolute best thing it can be!! Tonight we just broke 3500 backers which means that I have promised to record an audiobook version. Of our card game. We’re just gonna read all the cards in a row. It’ll probably be pretty great.

Also, this happened:

The Hot New Viral Hit: SUDDENLY, STREAMERS!

I was goofing around on Twitter today and tried to think of the dumbest viral video trend possible (in the fashion of planking or Harlem Shake videos). Here’s what I came up with!

(I don’t know if these Twitter embeds will show up on a feed, so if not, click through to the post to read them.)

Then it started to strike me as not just an idea for some funny video, but instead as commentary about the impulse to disrupt society:

And the most interesting idea of all was psychologically getting into the head of some imaginary person who would — assuming that making SUDDENLY, STREAMERS! video is a prima facie dumb idea — nonetheless spend a lot of time and effort making them.

Until finally…inevitably…the mad conclusion:

AND JUST A LITTLE WHILE LATER:

This is why I love the internet.

There’s still nine drawings unclaimed, everyone.

BONUS GREAT IDEA:

OBLIGATORY KICKSTARTER UPDATE

The Machine of Death card game campaign is now over 500% funded and still going strong! I’ve been posting videos every day with updates. Thanks to those who are supporting the campaign, and we’re working on lots of cool new stuff to show you in the coming days!

There are also a few things I’d love some help with. Please email me (dave at wondermark dot com) if you are:

  • an infographics designer and would like to perhaps design an infographic for me. Please include links to past work, and your rate information. UPDATE: Got this. Thanks!
  • in the Southern California area and have an adorable kitten, just the sweetest, most adorable little thing. Ideally a little one, I’d say under six months old – and the rompier, the better. We need to make a video!

Thanks!
