[[A guard clad in ostentatious armor stands blocking three travelers from crossing a bridge.]]
Guard: HALT! None shall pass! To cross this bridge, you must answer my set of seventeen riddles.

[[The travelers seem bemused.]]
Guard: If you get more than five of them right, you earn the chance to try the remainder a second time.
Guard: If you get eight or more right in a row, that’s a straight, and the total number that must be answered correctly drops from seventeen to sixteen.

Guard: This essentially gives you one free bonus point. You may use it to pass on any riddle or take back one incorrect answer.
Guard: This allows you to retry the incorrect riddle, and if you are correct, the bonus persists.

[[A banner with the text “AND SO” appears at the top of the page. It is now dark.]]
Guard: …select a topical subgroup. Or, you may waive this choice, and earn a handicap of one-half point per triad of riddles.
Guard: Any questions on subgroups?

[[The view turns back to the travelers, who are now skeletons, long dead.]]

[[The guard squints his eyes in an expression of satisfaction.]]
Guard: None shall pass

Applications open for Genius Northwest – an IRL gaming competition

Last year, I participated in Genius Northwest, a gaming competition inspired by the Korean gameshow The Genius and its ilk.

It’s a reality show without the cameras — a 3-day, all-inclusive weekend retreat structured around a series of challenges and puzzles, in which personalities and dealmaking matter as much as playing games.

It’s truly a remarkable thing. I came in dead last in the competition, but I still had a great time participating.

The event is held annually in the Pacific Northwest (hence the name) and applications are now open to participate in the 2026 competition!

Learn more — and apply — at GeniusNW.com.
