Artist: Good artists copy… GREAT artists STEAL!

Artist: Everyone says it!

Artist: Finally, the perfect justification for plagiarism! Stealing is totally acceptable! Got a problem? Take it up with this maxim!
Bystander: I’m not sure outright plagiarism is what the saying is referring to…
Artist: Sure it is! I stole the maxim and claimed it as my own, so I decide what it means!

Critic: Then why is plagiarism so frowned upon?
Artist: SERIOUSLY! People probably just haven’t heard the maxim yet!

Critic: Or perhaps it’s sometimes fun to take something existing, and in the act of recreating or reinterpreting it, figure out what new meaning you can bring to it, or use it to inspire you in unexpected ways.
Artist: Nuts to THAT interpretation! I say, plagiarism for everyone!

Artist: It turns out plagiarism is frowned upon, even when WHAT you’re plagiarizing is a HIGHLY CONVINCING EXPLANATION for why plagiarism is just ducky!

20 years ago (in photocomic form)

A young David Malki !, Steve Carey, and Ryan North, June 2006.

The computers tell me it was 20 years ago, June 9, 2006, that I arrived in New York for my first-ever comic convention as an exhibitor, MoCCA.

It was an important trip for me, a milestone in what would go on to become my career.

I wrote a little reminiscence on Patreon (free/unlocked) — including a first-since-then reprint of the photocomics I made at the time, documenting the trip!
