Tophat: I love finding old to-do lists from months or years ago.
Tophat: Sometimes I can check off, like, half of it instantly. I did eventually do that and that and that!
Tophat: You have no power here! I did you!

[[A disinterested-looking young girl joins the conversation.]]
Tophat: Other items I realize I didn’t ever do, and that’s okay. The sky didn’t fall. Nobody died. I thought it was super important at the time, but I’m over it now.
Tophat: And then… there’s the icebergs.
Dilettante: Icebergs?

Tophat: The stuff I didn’t finish then and still haven’t finished now.
Tophat: Still bobbing in my life like a giant cold iceberg. I can chip away at it, but there’s always so. Much. More.

Tophat: Wherever I go, whatever else I do, the iceberg follows. Silent… immense… stark in its beauty, but impenetrable.
Tophat: Too many of them can surround, freeze, lock me in place until I can’t move at all! Icebound.

Tophat: What’s the date on this list? Two years ago. I sighted these icebergs then.
Tophat: They are patient. They are silent. They reflect my shortcomings in their gleaming facets.

Tophat: I hate finding old to-do lists

20 years ago (in photocomic form)

A young David Malki !, Steve Carey, and Ryan North, June 2006.

The computers tell me it was 20 years ago, June 9, 2006, that I arrived in New York for my first-ever comic convention as an exhibitor, MoCCA.

It was an important trip for me, a milestone in what would go on to become my career.

I wrote a little reminiscence on Patreon (free/unlocked) — including a first-since-then reprint of the photocomics I made at the time, documenting the trip!
