Comic Transcripts

Part 3 of the story. Bill is visiting his mom’s house. He kisses her on the cheek as he removes his coat. This kiss gesture is mostly implied, I’m pretty pleased with how the compositing tells the story here. Because it’s the same body figure as the previous comic, just angled. I also gave him a scarf in the later panels, if you notice.

BILL: Hi, Mom.

MOM: Hi there, Billy. Merry Christmas.

MOM: Nicky coming to Christmas this year? have you heard from him at all?

BILL: I think he’s working. He usually works Christmas.

MOM: [tsk tsk] My WORD. A job that has you working EVERY Christmas Day. You’d think, as long as he’s been there, his boss could give him ONE Christmass off…

BILL: I think he…IS the boss? Guess I never really thought about whether there might be someone above him who likes to say in the shadows…Letting the flashy guy in the red suit get all the press. Koch brothers, something like that.

MOM: COKE BROTHERS! Oh, we used to call you that! You both did LOVE Coca-Cola…Nicky even did all those ads, do you remember!

BILL: Yeah, I’ll be this time of year he’s enjoying PLENTY of coke

He always says his boss is ''The children'' but I can't discount the notion that it's a few SPECIFIC children, perhaps standing on each other's shoulders, perhaps in a trench coat

20 years ago (in photocomic form)

A young David Malki !, Steve Carey, and Ryan North, June 2006.

The computers tell me it was 20 years ago, June 9, 2006, that I arrived in New York for my first-ever comic convention as an exhibitor, MoCCA.

It was an important trip for me, a milestone in what would go on to become my career.

I wrote a little reminiscence on Patreon (free/unlocked) — including a first-since-then reprint of the photocomics I made at the time, documenting the trip!
