[[A woman, MILDRECK, speaks to a young man, NORMAN.]]

MILDRECK: Now, Norman…as you grow up into a man, there are many important things to learn…

MILDRECK: You should, of course, be RESPECTFUL. Mind your elders, be conscientious, and work hard to be a success

MILDRECK: Still, don’t be afraid to blaze a new trail. UPEND the conventional wisdom! Don’t be a mindless sheep! Be a RENEGADE!

MILDRECK: Remember, though, to be KIND. Everyone you meet is fighting a battle of their own. Be empathetic, and consider others’ feelings.

MILDRECK: But most importantly, be true to yourself. Don’t LISTEN to what OTHERS may say…Follow your OWN heart.

NORMAN: Is this, like, META-ADVICE about the VALUE OF ADVICE?
MILDRECK: I’m reminded of the wisdom my OWN mother shared with me…which I didn’t understand at ALL until the day I independently reached the same conclusions

these things are not mutually exclusive, but you kinda have to figure that out on your own too

20 years ago (in photocomic form)

A young David Malki !, Steve Carey, and Ryan North, June 2006.

The computers tell me it was 20 years ago, June 9, 2006, that I arrived in New York for my first-ever comic convention as an exhibitor, MoCCA.

It was an important trip for me, a milestone in what would go on to become my career.

I wrote a little reminiscence on Patreon (free/unlocked) — including a first-since-then reprint of the photocomics I made at the time, documenting the trip!
