Jerrig sits on the roof of a house. The roof, chimney, and surrounding area bristles with machinery. Below, his wife Kendrii, holding a laundry basket, calls up to him:

Kendrii—All right, I’ve had it with all the racket! You’ve been up there CLOMPING and BANGING around for SIX HOURS! What are you DOING?

Jerrig—Just sort of, I dunno, puttering… I used some parts from the failed houseboat to rig up a sort of MAKESHIFT STEAM TURBINE in the chimney. Try to recapture some of the waste heat from the fireplace and turn it into house current… Probably not TERRIBLY efficient, but who knows, might power a few light bulbs.

Kendrii—SIX HOURS AGO you said you were getting up to EMPTY THE DISHWASHER.

Jerrig—Yeah, well… I guess I’ve been procrastinating

As you look through all the parts, it becomes increasingly clear why the houseboat failed

A young David Malki !, Steve Carey, and Ryan North, June 2006.

The computers tell me it was 20 years ago, June 9, 2006, that I arrived in New York for my first-ever comic convention as an exhibitor, MoCCA.

It was an important trip for me, a milestone in what would go on to become my career.

I wrote a little reminiscence on Patreon (free/unlocked) — including a first-since-then reprint of the photocomics I made at the time, documenting the trip!
