[[Tom sits on a chair. Bob stands behind him. Leonard sits in front of him, leaning forward. Many hats are piled on a table in the background. Tom is wearing a different hat in each panel.]]
Bob: You know, buying even more hats isn’t going to make you HAPPY. Don’t listen to society. You don’t have to be a CONSUMER to be FULFILLED.

Bob: Most objects provide a temporary pleasure at best. Then they just become more CLUTTER. Better to spend that money IMPROVING yourself so you don’t feel like you NEED yet another trinket.

Bob: Take up a sport! Treat yourself to an adventure! Buy EXPERIENCES rather than OBJECTS.
Tom: Okay. I am spending this money to buy the SLIGHTLY GIDDY RUSH of OBTAINING these HATS.

Bob: Really? The act of BUYING HATS is a THRILL worth paying a PREMIUM for?
Tom: Spoken like a person who has never straight-up BOUGHT A bunch of hats

{{alt-text: PLUS, thrown in at no extra cost, I ALSO get the experience of enjoying the hats from now until I get bored with them!}}

20 years ago (in photocomic form)

A young David Malki !, Steve Carey, and Ryan North, June 2006.

The computers tell me it was 20 years ago, June 9, 2006, that I arrived in New York for my first-ever comic convention as an exhibitor, MoCCA.

It was an important trip for me, a milestone in what would go on to become my career.

I wrote a little reminiscence on Patreon (free/unlocked) — including a first-since-then reprint of the photocomics I made at the time, documenting the trip!
