[[The Fisherman is standing in his small boat, holding the Horse Head out over the water.]]
Fisherman: All right, Starhorse. I’ve thought about this every way I know how. I realize that these situations always backfire on greed or attempts to game the rules. I just want wisdom, and knowledge, and satisfaction. Even only a fifth of that would be a step up for me. So that is what I wish.

[[The Fisherman drops the horse head into the water with a splash.]]

[[The Horse Head, poking up out of the water, speaks to the Fisherman]]
Horse Head: Since you wished not for riches, but only for the betterment of yourself, I will grant you this portion of your request: The ability to recognize the truth. To know, without a doubt, when you have been lied to.

[[The Horse Head sinks below the water’s surface.]]
Horse Head: Be well, fisherman. Lead a better life.

[[The Fisherman looks alarmed and cross.]]

Fisherman: You could have granted me whole wishes at any time?
Horse Head (off-panel): Ha ha ha
Horse Head: Seeya, sucker

Part 4 of this story. (Part 1.) Tomorrow: an epilogue.

20 years ago (in photocomic form)

A young David Malki !, Steve Carey, and Ryan North, June 2006.

The computers tell me it was 20 years ago, June 9, 2006, that I arrived in New York for my first-ever comic convention as an exhibitor, MoCCA.

It was an important trip for me, a milestone in what would go on to become my career.

I wrote a little reminiscence on Patreon (free/unlocked) — including a first-since-then reprint of the photocomics I made at the time, documenting the trip!
