Critic: All entertainment is on-demand, now.
Friend: I won’t watch ANYTHING unless it’s been vetted and reviewed and thumbsed-up for me!

Friend: I got limited TIME in my life!
Friend: There’s a million new things every day and I don’t want to waste a SECOND on something I may not like or haven’t already read SEVERAL glowing reviews for.

Critic: I guess if you want to spend your time in a homogenous MEDIA SILO
Friend: You know what they CALL a silo that’s been artfully crafted into JEWEL-LIKE FACETS of QUALITY and MEANING?
Friend: THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT

Critic: Fine. But you’re isolating yourself from serendipity.
Critic: Remember flipping channels at random? You’d SEE something, and STOP, and end up having an experience you couldn’t have predicted or planned?

Critic: Unexpected influences make you more interesting.
Critic: Limiting your media intake to the MASTER APPROVED LIST will make you BORING.
Friend: So, what’s your suggested fix?

Applications open for Genius Northwest – an IRL gaming competition

Last year, I participated in Genius Northwest, a gaming competition inspired by the Korean gameshow The Genius and its ilk.

It’s a reality show without the cameras — a 3-day, all-inclusive weekend retreat structured around a series of challenges and puzzles, in which personalities and dealmaking matter as much as playing games.

It’s truly a remarkable thing. I came in dead last in the competition, but I still had a great time participating.

The event is held annually in the Pacific Northwest (hence the name) and applications are now open to participate in the 2026 competition!

Learn more — and apply — at GeniusNW.com.
