[[A man and a woman sit on a fence in front of a field]]
Man: Seeing as how it’s Valentine’s day, I decided to do something special.
Woman: Oh?
Man: Since we are both big into TRADITION, I decided to observe the feast of LUPERCALIA which was the pagan predecessor to St. Valentine’s Day.

Man: On that day the youths of the village would put each others’ names in a box and then draw the name of the person they would partner with for the next year.
Man: I suppose Ancient Rome was in some ways like a hippie commune.

Man: So I did the same. I put your name in a box and I put my name in a box.
Woman: Awwww!
Man: And to be historically accurate I then added a bunch of names from the phone book.

Man: I drew a name for myself earlier this morning.
Man: She answered the first time I called, but not any of the subsequent times. I will keep trying her.
Man: I guess you could call me an incurable romantic! The box is on the porch if you would like to try your luck.

{{alt-text: If you do choose to feel around blindly in the box, just remember that my name is on a much larger and thicker piece of paper}}

20 years ago (in photocomic form)

A young David Malki !, Steve Carey, and Ryan North, June 2006.

The computers tell me it was 20 years ago, June 9, 2006, that I arrived in New York for my first-ever comic convention as an exhibitor, MoCCA.

It was an important trip for me, a milestone in what would go on to become my career.

I wrote a little reminiscence on Patreon (free/unlocked) — including a first-since-then reprint of the photocomics I made at the time, documenting the trip!
