Drawings: scowly sketches
September 3rd, 2007
Some of the very earliest sketches for a character that you’ll see a lot more of soon. Again, part of my ongoing self-education in cartooning.
I use a font for the lettering in Wondermark — I don’t think my scrawl would really suit the tone, nor be legible at reduced sizes — but I have a huge respect for artists like Dave Kellett and Dorothy Gambrell who hand-letter their strips; I think it adds loads of character and energy to the art. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play around more with hand-lettering.
